Confusing Medicare Phrases Part 1 – Why Medicare Advantage Isn’t Identical to Original Medicare
One of the most misleading statements about Medicare Advantage plans is that they “cover all the same benefits as Medicare Part A and Part B.” This isn’t accurate. A better way to say it is that Medicare Advantage covers benefits in the same categories as Parts A and B — but not always to the same extent.
Here’s the difference:
Original Medicare will generally cover all the medically necessary services your doctor recommends, such as unlimited physical therapy if needed.
Medicare Advantage plans may set limits. For example, they could stop covering physical therapy once costs exceed a certain amount — even if your doctor recommends more.
While both programs are regulated by Medicare, Medicare Advantage plan rules can differ significantly from Original Medicare’s coverage standards. Knowing this distinction is critical when choosing your plan, so you’re not caught off guard by denied services or unexpected costs.
