Can I Still Contribute to My HSA After Starting Medicare?
No — once you’ve started Medicare, you may still use your Health Savings Account (HSA) funds, but you can no longer contribute to it. This rule applies whether you enroll in Medicare Part A or Part B.
Why Does Enrolling in Medicare Part A Create Issues for HSA Contributions?
The complication comes when you enroll in Medicare Part A after your Initial Enrollment Period. That’s because Part A hospital coverage often has a retroactive start date.
How Far Back Is Medicare Part A Coverage Retroactive?
When you enroll late, Medicare Part A coverage will:
Start six months retroactive to your enrollment date, or
Begin on your original Medicare eligibility date,
whichever is sooner.
This retroactive coverage means you may have been considered enrolled in Medicare earlier than you thought — making any HSA contributions during that retroactive period ineligible.
